MUSEUM OF RESISTANCE

Kherson needs such a museum. The Museum of Resistance, or the Museum "I am Kherson", or the Museum of Liberation of Memory – it is up to the community itself to decide what to call it. But it is needed. It is confirmed not only by surveys of Kherson residents and the opinion of experts, but also by the fact that the idea of such a museum is already being implemented in Kherson with small initiatives, exhibitions, publication of books with memories and diaries of the occupation, attempts to collect materials - artifacts of the occupation and texts.

It turns out that this is also very important: to show not just something shot by the military, but civilian things. This is what affects foreigners emotionally.

If we talk about the long-term perspective after the victory, it should be a cool, large-scale open-air military museum near Chornobayivka airport. It’s an international airport, people fly in and immediately see the museum.

Such a museum is not only a way of immoratlizaztion of the memory of the fighters for a free Ukrainian Kherson, but also a place where its identity is vocalized. This is a museum that records not only our losses, but also our choices – our right to be Ukrainians and Europeans and our power to defend our choices.

The modern history of Kherson began with its occupation by Russian troops on March 1, 2022. Resistance to the Russian occupation became a powerful manifestation of the Ukrainian identity of the south, a manifesto that the whole world was hearing and watching.

During the 8 months of occupation, Kherson lost a lot - first of all, the city lost people who left the occupation and still cannot return due to lack of security. At the same time, something new appeared – iconic symbols and events that unite the people of Kherson. Thousands of stories, and everyone has their own. From these stories, just like a mosaic, the current history of unconquered Kherson is created.

The history of Kherson is just starting.

It is the Museum of Resistance that has the potential to become one of the starting points of recovery, a powerful "place of strength" that will heal the collective trauma of the Kherson community and attract people – for locals to return, for the people from other cities of Ukraine and other countries to try to reach and understand.

The creation of such a museum requires the cooperation of the authorities and the community, experts and enthusiasts.

And we also need a vision of what it will be like.

We see it as modern, up-to-date, as human-focused as possible, truthful, and therefore decided to contribute to the formation of the vision of such a museum. This collection presents artifacts and stories that will help to understand what Kherson is, what it meant to be a person from this city, a person from Ukraine during the occupation, because the phenomenon of Kherson resistance is our newest identity.
